I feel stupid for asking this but when I put the airlock on my fermenter, do I put the lid on the airlock, or just put water (or vodka) in it,and leave the lid off.

Tim

The lid just keeps the water or vodka from evaporating quicker and keeps stuff from falling in it. The lid should have little holes in it. You don't have to have it, but it is there for a reason. If you were to not use the lid, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Edit: I type REALLY slow

We don't have 3 piece in the UK only 1 and 2 piece. The lid needs to be on the 2 piece and there is no lid on the one piece.

Now, that info was probably no use to you what so ever but it may help a UK noob if they are smart enough to search.

Put water in and mix the vodka with a little tomato juice, hot sauce and black pepper. mmmm. breakfast.

I put the cap on top to keep out debris. I always sanitize the stopper and airlock before putting them on the carboy, but I just use plain tap water, not sanitizer or alcohol in the airlock. Works fine.

Ditto. I put on the top, you wouldn't want it to be in the middle of a heavy ferment and have the cap not go back down, then have some kind of crap fall in there.

I always put the lid on mine. I used to use vodka in my airlocks all the time but now only do it half the time. Tap water works fine for me, and I am with Orfy...drink it in a bloody mary.
