Hi everybody.
A brewer friends and I have been talking about doing a collab brew together recently and the idea of doing something different came up. One idea was a pure oatmeal based brew. My question is if there is enough sugar from an oatmeal wort to be able to pitch yeast or would we need to add a brewers sugar to help along the process. All help is much apprieciated!

Thanks in advance
jayphelan.

I don't know if oatmeal can convert the starches itself. You may need to throw in a little bit a 2-row to help with the conversion. Otherwise you could go strictly 2-row and rolled oats but I have no idea how that would turn out.

Rolled oats have 0 diastatic power (DP), and it appears that Brewer's friend has a gravity points per pound per gallon (ppg) value of 33. It won't convert itself, so you could try some amylase.

Malted oats are self-converting; similar to 6-row in DP. You could use 50/50 malted oats and rolled oats.
