I was wondering how early in the year I should brew a batch of pumpkin beer to have it good and ready by Sept time frame.

That is a great question. I got mine started late last year (first week of October). The beer was fine for Halloween but I opened 1 last night and it was WAY better. I will try again in 3 more months and see...

Most pumpkin beers begin coming out first of September. I used to brew mine for Halloween-time, but it felt late in the year by then and most people were pumpkin'd out by that time.

So, now I brew it in late July, putting it in the bottle around mid/late August. I like mine after it's been in the bottle a bout 4 - 6 weeks, so mine peaks late September/early October and holds steady through Thanksgiving.
