This is coming from a plumber and an extremely novice brewer. That’s a decent recirc pump, but I wouldn’t use it for brewing. I don’t believe it would be serviceable/cleanable enough. But I could be wrong on the brewing side of the question.

I’ve been thinking of building an AG system and noticed a link in a members sig line today and found this one: http://www.bargainfittings.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=68&product_id=282

If I do build one over the summer I’ll probably go with it.

I'm not planning on useing it on the cold side, just mash recirculation and transfer to the boil kettle. So I'm not worried about it infecting the beer.

Why are you interested in a less than ideal (for brewing) pump that costs significantly more than pumps that are much more suitable? In my opinion, the best pumps for brewing are magnetically coupled drive pumps. In these pumps there are no shaft seals that can leak or allow lubricant contamination of the wort.

Brew on :mug:

I'm looking to use it because I have it new in the box. I was going to use it for a hot water return system but never did.

I would call the company and ask if it’s a food grade pump, just because it’s for a potable system, doesn’t mean it’s food grade. The very first guy I bought some brewing equipment from told me whatever I do, only use food grade equipment.

As a plumber who has worked residential, commercial, hospital, restaurant... not to mention my time in three phase winding, electric motor and pump work. What I know on that side of your question, and I don’t know everything, but enough to know that I wouldn’t use it for anything but a wort chiller for brewing. I can’t tell you how many recirc pumps I’ve replaced, including Taco pumps that are loaded with sediment, rust... same as with water heaters. I’ll post a picture of what came out of a potable water heater three years old. Second floor, so we partially drained it into the tub. Actually plugged the drain. 1920’s building and I suspect improper materials are somewhere in the system. But just an example of what can be in potable systems.

I recently asked a question on here about a stainless steel pump head and impeller from Harbor Frieght for transfer without thinking before posting. Saw stainless and thought... maybe. Nope. Brain fart on my part.

I’m not saying this will happen in your system especially if it’s a closed system, just the worst case scenario. But if you do call the company ask them if there’s any adverse effect on the metal material including the mechanical seal rubbers using PBW and starsan.

I just got the 25 dollar Amazon pump. Bought two, in case one fails. At that price, even if I only get 3-4 brew days out of them on average, I'll be happy enough.

I'm not allowed to post links apparently, but you can PM me for a link or just search Amazon for: bayite BYT-7A015

In that case, why not just get a chugger pump that could last you significantly longer? I'd hate for the pump to fail mid-brew.

I've heard of people having issues with the chuggers after several brew days. I can buy about 6 tan pumps at the cost of one chugger.
