Hey guys and gals,

I'm on my second bomber of Propeller ESB tonight and man this beer is so damn good. It is definitely my favorite beer and has been since last summer when I first tried it. Propeller is a microbrewery here in Halifax and most if not all of their beers are really good.

Here's their web page for the ESB: http://www.drinkpropeller.ca/beers/7-Bitter

The profile they list for this beer is as follows:
IBU's- 30
Hops- Willamatte, Warrior.
Malts- Pale, Crystal and Chocolate.
Water- Soft
Colour- 15.9°L

Does anyone here have an extract recipe with a similar profile? I'm not sure if they'll give me specifics.

Thanks!

If you're not sure, why not ask? Most micros don't see homebrewers as competition. I'm currently trying to dial in a Fuller's ESB clone.....good luck!

I still have my Propeller t-shirt from back in 1998 when I lived in Halifax... Would not mind finding a clone of that ESB...

just email them and ask. I have gotten really good information that way to make a clone. They probably won't give you the precise yeast, though!

I was wondering the same thing. Have you found any details from Propeller?

If not, I started tinkering around with a partial mash recipe using the ingredients at my LHBS. How does this sound? I haven't tried it yet though.

Propeller ESB Clone?

OG = 1.055 / FG = 1.016 (5% booze)
Colour = 16 SRM
IBU = 30

Extract
4.5 lbs Light DME

Partial Mash
3.50 lbs Gambrinus ESB Pale (3-4 SRM)
1.00 lbs Crystal 70-80L
0.50 lbs Flaked Wheat
0.20 lbs Chocolate Malt

Hops
0.5 oz Zeus (15%, whole) [60 min]
1 oz Williamette (4.7%, pellets) [15 min]
1 oz Williamette (4.7%, pellets) [7 min]
1 oz Williamette (4.7%, pellets) [1 min]

Yeast
Wyeast 1968 London ESB

NOTE: You could make this an extract/steep recipe by upping the DME to 7.4 lbs and eliminating the ESB Pale malt and flaked wheat.

UPDATE: I just sent Propeller an email. I'll update the recipe if they get back to me.

Thanks. I haven't contacted them but I think they are homebrewer friendly.

Yes, send them an email. That's exactly what I did when my neighbor asked me if I could brew a beer from Kona Brewing. I emailed them and the Brewmaster replied with the following:

"Malt is 2-row and Gambrinus Honey Malt. Hops are Warrior & Millenium for bittering (although you can substitute another high alpha hop if you like), Willamette & Hallertau for flavor/aroma.

Our targets:

OG 12.5 P
IBU 18
ABV 5.3%
Color 7.0 L (finished beer)
Ale yeast

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Cheers,

Rich

Rich Tucciarone, Brewmaster
Kona Brewing Company"

Plugged the info in to BeerSmith and started playing around with the ingredients until I hit on a combonation that matched the above info. And while I've never had this beer my neighbor says it's pretty darn close.

I asked Propeller (in a polite and gracious manner) for any tips on brewing an ESB inspired after their own, but only got a terse reply that they don't share recipes. Oh well. I can understand not wanting to share their secrets; they already provided colour and the basic ingredients. I think the units on the colour rating is wrong (see here), but I couldn't get them to confirm it for me. Oh well. I'll try out the recipe above and see how she goes.

I drink alot of propellor ESB, and I was kinda trying to get something close to it. Here's a recipie I brewed up, and a few friends found the malt profile was pretty close. Although the Hops are different, you could substitute as nessessary if you wish. Cheers

I'll really, really have to have this beer.

I love, love Halifax and would move there if the opportunity arose.
The bartenders at one brewery remembered me after a year's absence from town--by name! It was wonderful to feel so welcome while enjoying such good beer.

Also: I REALLY dug Gahan's Brewing Co. on Charlottetown, PEI.
Bummed I didn't get to have any beer with local blueberries, though.

Sorry, I know this isn't a helpful post -- I just wanted to give a cheers to Halifax and Nova Scotia in general! Fitting, as well: I'm having my very first pint of my very first brew -- an ESB -- and it isn't all that bad considering I hamfistedly came up with the recipe on my own.

Cheers!
