Propane Burner for 30 Gallon

Hey all,

I am looking at picking up a few propane burners and just wanted to reach out to see what everybody was using specifically for 30 gallon kettle. I was looking at the Edelmetall or the Blichmann Hellfire burners. Just not sure if they will be adequate enough to hold the weight and also get it to boiling in a decent amount of time.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have access to natural gas? Would be a lot more affordable heating with that. Or electric.

Both the original Floor Burner and the Hellfire Burner share a common chassis rated for use with their 30 gallon kettles.
If you've ever seen one of these up close it's clear they could support even more weight, they just don't have the spread in the adjustable pot rests...

I have natural gas and the meter and the pipe are accessible right outside my garage, but I am not sure if I am going to be staying at this location much longer. I am going to have to upgrade to a bigger house to support a growing family.

Electric may be an option, but my panel is old and I would most likely have to upgrade it.

That was my next question. I see they have the feet that can adjust for pot sizes and was wondering if they would be able to adjust to the 30 gallon pot. From your response I presume they most certainly will.

I am looking into buying a 30 gallon MT, BK, and HLT and was really interested in ordering Spike Brewing equipment over anything else I have looked at so far. I got a quote from them and it is a pretty penny, but I still need to figure out how I want to set this up as well.

I still have the Blichmann Floor Burner documentation and it shows the pot rest settings for their kettles from 10g through 30g. So only their 50 gallon kettle was left out.

fwiw, you really can't buy a better burner than either Blichmann model. They are stainless steel beasts - and while they might not fit a 50 gallon kettle the pot actually sits atop the legs (and not any part of the burner or windscreen). You would literally drive the legs into the ground (or flooring) before they ever gave up...

You can get Natural Gas orifices for those burners if you want to hook them up to your NG supply.

I’d love to if I were staying in the place I’m at. If I had a really ideal spot I would run a line for natural gas. ATM I’d rather be able to move my setup if I needed to. I’m trying to keep the setup flexible in a sense.

I just ordered two Blichmann Hellfires to get started.

I have the hellfire and the Spike+ 30 gal. They do well together. I am very happy! BTW, Boil time is close to the same as my older 15 gal kettle.

I’ve been brewing with some 8 gallon kettles and keg and it would def help to have those raised up a bit. I know the 30 gallon kettle is much larger, but definitely looks good in the pic.

I appreciate the offer man, but I just told my wife’s cousin (my brew partner) I ordered the two Blichmann’s and will build out from there.

I looked at the tier system and was unsure of it. How did you like it and why have you decided to sell it?

Are you happy with Spike Brewing equipment?

I just got a quote for the TC system all flame, no electric) and it’s a shiny penny, but I am not going to buy something of lesser quality and regret it later. I want my sons to use the equipment when they can brew years to come. I’ve been doing a lot of research between the Blichmann, Edelmetall Bru, or Spike. I was looking at SsBrewtech but it seems the reviews, comments and the equipment fluctuate between being great to people having issues, whereas everybody that has the Spike system is happy with it. It seems to be more comparative to the Blichmann with the exception that Spike is somewhat outsourced beyond the USA for some manufacturing.

Edelmetall doesn’t even have a website.

Epoch, I do have the leg extensions on the burner. I like the upgrade and never plan to boil on the shorter legs (I forgot it comes with the shorter legs). Spike is certainly the way to go (Spike+ Kettles are the best on the market IMO [Spike+ has the TC]). They have very nice equipment and customer service is great! My other “go to” is Brewers Hardware”. I know this hobby is expensive, but my wife and I budget each month, and I have a Brewing category that has gotten me to this level over many years. I have been using the cooler mash tun over 6 years and plan to add another Spike+ very soon. ALL Spike V3 kettles are on sale in their bargain basement now as they released their V4 line in January. They equipment will certainly outlast the next generation of brewers if cared for properly. Buy once and Cry once!

I thought about making a flowview as the conical fermenter adds so many more parts and different cleaning methods than what I have been use to over the years (CIP ball with sump pump, close to 100 new parts to clean but my [back thanks me as the pumps do the work], chiller top off, plug in the damn chiller lines to the quick disconnects on the fermenter! The last one was a tough lesson). Still a work in progress.

Yeah, agreed. Based on the research I’ve been doing over the past few weeks and reading all the chatter through multiple mediums the answer is definitely Spike.

I just have to allocate the funding to make it happen, plus organize an area for this in my garage over the next couple of months.

fwiw, when I was brewing with 10g kettles I also went with the 24" legs. But I modded the original legs to allow the new ones to be sistered along side for a substantially increased spread...

I still have a set of legs around somewhere. I should sell them...

Nice man! So from what it looks like you lost a little bit of height from the leg extensions being mounted the way you did it but still met your requirements and gained some width on it.

Zero height lost. The tops of the 24" legs are exactly where they would be if I had simply replaced the short legs...
