The spoils of victory...and no, that's not an Orc from Mordor...

Sooooo, it is peak blackberry time and my neighbor and I went to reap the horn o' plenty. After a couple of hours, we come home triumphant from hunting the elusive and wiley blackberry, only to discover that El Hubbo had claimed some game of his own. He had just started slaughtering a wild hog, or as he likes to phrase it "organic, free-range pork" :

El Hubbo and friend. (Yes, he's Jewish. But don't worry, the hog is circumsized.

Wild hogs are a big problem in this neck of the woods, as they run rampant and have decimated the sweet potato industry. There is no limit, no season. This was a young male, probably about 120 lbs, with sizeable tusks:

Our neighbor tells us that we need to put the head on an ant hill and let 'em clean it off. Then we can have us a souvenir!

Oh, well.

Meanwhile, my blackberry picking spoils got put on the backburner, but I got some nice ones!:

Mmmmm, baby...I like the size of your berries...

I've had many a run in with East Texas hogs as a kid... Where abouts do you hunt? I'm originally from Conroe and spent some time in both Crockett and Lufkin before moving to GA. My father worked for Lousiana Pacific and was able to get us on their prime deer lease on the Neches river until we moved.

We live in Canton and this hog was taken just across the road from our house, in a kind of swampy area. It was still daylight, so something must've flushed it out.

Wow, you have blackberries ripe already? Around here the brambles are starting their first growths and will be blooming sometime around September.

Hey bebbie, nice berries. mmmmmm ohhh yea.....

Just have to give thanks for the On The Border margarita bucket in the photo!! That is who I work for. I appreciate the support!! Nice Berries and hog. I have had many a good meal from wild Texas hog. We used to cook them up yucatan style w/ lots of achiote and orange.

What type of camera did you use? It looks like you have a light leak coming from the top.

Back on topic: Beautiful hog, I wish we had those up in Oregon. I've been eating plenty of wild pig here in Germany and have become very fond of the taste.

RDWHAHB and SKAAEDT (Stop killing animals and eating dead things)

:off:

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast breweries of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the boil.

One thousand, nay a trillion voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?"

And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the yeasts, the cries of the yeasts! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is bottling day and to them it is the holocaust."

And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one trillion terrified cells and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the homebrewers wear glasses! Save our bretheren!"

Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

I want to say that first Monday still exists, but I don't know anyone who has gone in ages. My Grandma used to live in Sulphur Springs and I know she would go way back when. I still see a sign for it when I drive along the highway there.

Ahh! I found a link http://www.firstmondaycanton.com/

Finally got the internet up working again!

Yes, First Monday is still the biggest thing around. Tornado hit it last week, a fact which my mother met with "How could you tell?"

Other replies:

I use a little digital camera, a Canon Powershot that is over 4 years old. I've known that I want to upgrade for some time now and your observation just sealed the deal. I am thinking about getting a Nikon D80 camera body as it will fit El Hubbo's old lenses from when he used to run a photography studio. I need to seriously bone up on the physics of shooting again. I've gotten pretty lazy with the whole point-n-shoot digital I have now. Haven't thought about shutter speeds or focus points or anything in years and years.

We haven't had any of the hog yet, but I did keep one ham out to age in the fridge a bit. Plan on cookin' it up later this week.

One last reply: I am an omnivore. You don't have to be. I am. It will stay that way. I respect your rights to eat what you want. You do the same and we'll all be okay here. I respectully request that you leave me alone about it and take the debate to another thread, if you wish. Just don't sully this one, if you don't mind. Thank you.
