Hey all, this is my second brew, both extracts and the beer in the primary right now looks like mud or coffee with light cream. Its an IPA and some of the hops got into the fermenter as well. I don't remember my first brew, an ESB, looking this way. Am I paranoid for no reason or did I do something wrong?

It's been in there for 3 days and there a nice krausen formed and it's bubbling away otherwise.

I can't tell you if this is true or not (or even possible for that matter), but I feel like the wheat beer I recently brewed lightened up (in the carboy) over the course of the fermentation. I may have just been imagining things though...

It very well could have been less light passing through because of active yeast and additional sediment.

Yeah, I find a lot of my lighter ales seem to change color when fermenting. When I first transfer to my primary carboy, I notice the beer starts of a darker brown. Then as active fermentation occurs, I see lots of sediment, etc form up and swirl around making it look quite "tanner". It seems to take awhile to let the beer clear: though if I'm looking for really clear, I'll cold crash after placing in secondary.

Anyway, as to the OP...you can't really tell anything from color changes in your fermenter....tasting is the real truth: you can get a better idea of how the beer is going to taste by tasting those hydrometer readings. It sometimes takes awhile to get all the sediment to settle and get clear beer.

*edit* saw the pics....I'd say there's nothing that indicates a problem....relax and have a homebrew! :) I'm sure your first sample of it will taste great.
 
Looks like a good healthy fermentation with a lot of yeast in suspension (causing the cloudiness). Looks like you're in a very good position!

Might want to put a blanket over your carboy to block the light.
 
The beer I have in primary looks like mud, even in the hydro sample container.

Of course it IS a double chocolate oatmeal stout... :D
