I have a recipe printed from HBF and have generated everything in Brewers Friend to double check my replacement ingredients are correctly measured etc. etc.

However, the original recipe breakdown calls for a Pre-boil wort size of 8.89L, with a finished wort size of 7.5L for a 5 gal /19L batch.

So that's a ferm. top off amount of 3 gals / 11.5 L roughly

However according to Brewers Friend, ill need 17.6 L of top off water. I don't know which one to follow. Brewers Friend has completely thrown me off:

Target: 19L
Grain absorb. : -0.1
boil water added: 8.9
boil off losses: -6
hops absorb. : -0.4
misc. : -1
top off amount: 17.6
Total: 26.5

Brewers Friend calcs. have also come out pretty close to the original recipe, OG between 1.048 - 54 and I'm at 1.052. SRM and IBU are slightly lower than the recipe, which makes me question which is right, Surely if the volume is off by 7 litres for goodness sake that would throw off everything.

As long as you top off the final volume to 5 gallons and your OG is right you are in the green. RDWHAHB. But since you asked it's probably a different in the grain absorption or the boil off. Both very from one brewer to another and are very dependant on your brewing methods.

when doing a partial boil, the only calculator that matters is the 5 gallon mark on your fermentor.

boil off losses: -6 << I don't think this is right, should be about 2.

I'd top off to 5.25 or 5.5 gallons to allow for the trub. But, yes, topping off you go by the fermenter.

It thinks you are going to boil 9 liters to start with, and loose 6 to evaporation:
boil water added: 8.9
boil off losses: -6

I would look into adjusting your equipment profile. Then rebuild the brew and you'll be fine (unless your boil off rate really is 6L per hour?). Did you update your profile's boil off rate perhaps?
