Pre-boil gravity question in beersmith

Hi all

I've done a search and haven't found and answer to this, apologies if it has been answered somewhere! I brewed a batch yesterday, but found my pre-boil og was way off the estimate in beersmith. I hit 1.065 and BS estimated 1.076. I remembered temperature could make a difference (as it was post mash it was at 50C.

An online calculator I found said 1.065 measured at 50C was about 1.076 at 20c.

So does beersmith account for this temperature? Or do I need to do the calf?

You need to do the calc (or use the calculator in Beersmith). Hydrometers can be calibrated for different temperatures so Beersmith doesn't make an assumption and gives the post temp correction value.

The 'hydrometer' function under 'tools' in beersmith will make the calculation for you and you can then enter the adjusted number into the recipe.

Since your hydrometer reading was taken at 50c or 122F I would personally disregard it as inaccurate. Any reading taken well over 100F is pretty much worthless even with temp correction. Ideally you cool the sample down to below 100F and accuracy of temp correction is much more reliable.

BS does have the hydrometer tool to use for these corrections and calculations. What was your post boil OG? How close were you to the expected. If you were good on this than I wouldn't worry about the pre-boil reading you got but in the future keep the above advice in mind
