Hi fellow hop growers!

I am just starting to burrs on my plants and I am a little confused on the production of the plants.

My cascade and centennial, both planted last year as rhizomes, are doing great again! Tons of burrs!

However, my mt. hood and willamette, both transplanted to my yard from a friends house, are 5 years old this year and have less than a quarter of the burrs that the two rhizomes have.

It was the same way last year as well. The first year rhizomes out performed the mature plants.

Does anyone know why this would be the case?

I'm going to guess that the five year old plants pretty much consumed all the important nutrients around them over the years and are starving for soil amendments, while the new plants are in fresh rich soil.

Am I right?

Cheers! ;)
