I'm sure this question has come up before and I just didn't come across it.
I just got a burner and large kettle so I can do full-wort boils now. I don't have the equipment to do a full-mash, but do have enough for a BIAB brew day. I'd like to do a PM BIAB of around 4lbs grains. Since this is essentially a partial-mash, I'm wondering what volume of water would one use for BIAB method of 4lbs grain? I've been doing partial-mashes of this recipe and worked up to 2lbs grain in a little igloo water cooler on the counter. Beers turned out amazing by the way!

How large is your kettle? Is it at least 7.5 gallons?

Doing BIAB you can do a full mash, then boil with Fermcap, and it will prevent a boil over. You say you don't have the equipment but all you need that you might not have is a BIAB bag. There are many options and they aren't expensive.

For just 4 pounds, I would mash on the stove top and not bother with doing it on the burner.

You could go as thick as 1.25 qt/pound to much thinner, say 2.5 qts/pound. I tend to modify based on how light or dark the beer is in an guess/attempt to keep my ph under control (thicker for lighter beers). If you have a big enough pot, you may want to just go full BIAB/all grain brewing. I think you might have an easier time holding temps that way. Cheers!
