The summary:
I opened my kegerator today and most of the surfaces inside of the kegerator smelled of phosphorus (like matches). The smell doesn't come off easily after touching surfaces in the fridge.
Details:
I made a bock lager a few months ago. Started fermenting in early may at around 48-50F. It went for about a month, slowed down, and the gravity was about right to finish it up (~1.010).
Then I tried something new.
Instead of lagering in my fermenter i thought I would try lagering in my corny keg. The gas line from my kegerator was attached to the "fluid side" of the keg and I dropped it into a bleach solution in a glass cup inside the kegerator. Dropped the temperature down to 35-38F and it was watched slightly for the last 6 weeks.
The only "hiccup" i can think of is that i orginally dropped in the metal ends of the "gas line" of my fridge into the bleach solution over night (the first night). The metal seemed corroded the next morning, so I tossed the solution, cut the line, and just put the bare plastic into the bleach. The line is one of those vinyl braded hose.
Once opened the beer itself smelled like beer, but the outside of the kegerator reaks, so it is kind of hard to tell.
The kegerator was wiped down and so was the outside of keg.
I haven't tasted the beer yet. There is some hope that it really is just the fridge picking up odors from the bleach solution, so the plan was to let it sit 24 hours without the solution in there and see if it dissapates. Tommorrow I was going to hook up the lines to kegerator and see how the lager tastes.
Any ideas? Anyone seen/smelled this before?
Thank you for any help/suggestions!
