I finally got the chance to try the pycnometer, to measure FG of a beer I will bottle tomorrow. The hydrometer reading was just a hair over 1.010 (as well as my eyeball could interpret). I filled the pycnometer up to its mouth, tapped to get rid of bubbles, measured the temp--65F, set the hollow stopper atop it, wiped the outside dry and weighed. My calcs come out to 1.0108, so not bad. My gram scale's resolution goes 2 places, so not bad.
I don't need that that kind of accuracy for measuring SG, but the pycnometer was only $20, and I like gadgets, so why not?
