I have been using pellet hops. I have just let them settle to the bottom of kettle while cooling. I then collect wort through my valve without a pickup tube.

I am now growing hops and will need to change my strategy a bit. I will probably brew with both pellets and whole hops at times.

Here is what I plan to do:

1. Put pellet hops in a hop spider
2. Put whole hops loose in the kettle
3. Add a bazooka screen to my kettle to filter the whole hops

Do any of you deal with hops this way? Does this make sense.

Thanks

The bazooka screen on my kettle gets clogged up with the break material.

But if it works for you it sounds like a viable option, but I'm curious as to how much liquid you leave behind.

I probably leave behind about a gallon or more of hop debris, cold break, and wort. I don't like the idea of cold break clogging the bazooka tube, so I will probably just put all the hops in the spider.

That's what I do when I have a ton of whole hops and less pellet hops. Or, if I have more pellet hops, I'll bag the leaf (whole) hops and leave the pellet hops free and skip the bazooka tube. It really depends on the hops I have on hand and how many ounces of each I'm using.

I have a dip tube on my keggle that I slip a true SS scrubby under (Amazon has three packs for like $10). If I use leaf hops...no problems and the leaf hops act as an additional filter. If I use a lot of pellet hops, I have an occasional clog that can be blown out with a turkey baster but the flow is still severely restricted (10 minutes per 5 gallons).

Use a fine mesh hop bag. I use them for both pellet and leaf hops and it keeps all the junk contained, but lets the hoppy goodness out... I suppose your hop spider will accomplish the same result.
