Ok so I normaly make beer but a friend gave me 20 to 30 lbs of pears. I figured I'd make some wine. I thought about adding some apple juice or cider to it for some flavor. Any thoughts? Anything else I should do to make this wine awesome... Since its my first.

I've made pear wine in the past and have tasted others' pear wine. Definitely use 6-8 lbs of pears per gallon, or you will be lacking flavor and body, even if you use a lot of raisins.

When I made pear wine using 7 lbs pear and 1 lb of gold raisins per gallon it turned out with nice pear flavor (which seems to increase with age) and decent body. My next batch I will increase the pear to 8 lbs / gallon.

Others that have used 3-4 lbs of pears / gallon were lacking flavor to the point that it was always difficult to tell what the fruit was.
