What's a good way to figure out what my begenning OG should be and do i know accordging to the OG when my beer is done fermenting?

Tim

Are you brewing extract or AG?

For extract, you will ahve a certain number of gravity points per lb of extract per gallon of wort. I don't use extract, so I don't know these numbers off the top of my head, but they should be easy to find.

If you care brewing AG, the amount of sugars (and therefore gravity points) you get out of the grain will be determined by your efficiency. I would recommend a brewing software such as BeerSmith or BrewTarget.

Your beer is done fermenting when you get a stable SG reading 2-3 days apart. Use a hydrometer to know for sure.

If you brewed from a kit the recipe will tell you what the OG should be for a 5 gallon batch, and this figure is pretty reliable.

Otherwise you will have to figure it out based on the malts you used, the amounts, and the final volume you had.

Typically, people take a gravity reading right before they pitch their yeast to find out, though this can be misleading when brewing a batch where most of the fermentables are from extracts as their viscosity can make it difficult to mix them in thoroughly before you pitch. Meaning your sample can be higher or lower than what it actually is due to samlping a more or less concentrated area of wort.
