Oatmeal IPA?

It's one of those days where i am thinking up recipes to brew up with ingrediants that I have laying around.

This sounds interesting to me..what do you think...just a touch of american choco for color..may not be necassary.

Beer: Oatmeal Pale Ale Style: India Pale Ale
Type: All grain Size: 5 gallons
Color: 17 HCU (~10 SRM) Bitterness: 49 IBU
OG: 1.067 FG: 1.014
Alcohol: 6.8% v/v (5.3% w/w)
Grain: 10 lb. American 2-row
1 lb. 4 oz. CaraAmber
1 lb. Rolled oats
1 oz. American chocolate
Mash: 75% efficiency
Boil: minutes SG 1.056 6 gallons
Hops: 1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 30 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 15 min.)

i would then dry hop with an ounce of Cascade as well......I have an 8 oz sack of cascade to use up!
 
I always get more of a slick/oily from oats than anything else. Might go nice with the resin from a hoppy IPA.

I'd add another 1oz addition of 5 minutes and move the 30 minute to 15 or 20 minutes left. Counting dryhopping, I have 4oz in my IPA after 20min. *shrug*
 
Hey thanks, I really appreciate the advice. moving those back in the schedule and dry hopping...should give an amazing aroma.
 
How did the Oatmeal IPA turn out? I'm interesting in blending styles (mostly with IPAs since I'm a hop head).

Sounds like it'd turn out looking like an extra hazy beer. Something along these lines (dreadnaught):

permo reported that the oatmeal IPA came out well for those interested in playing with this technique.
 
That is correct, it is a little hazy, but also quite delicious. Oats are a very nice addition. I am just so sick of "C" hops that I am not all that high on this beer anymore.

One reccomendation for an IPA, that I can say is amazing but very outside the norm is to use northern brewer hops for flavor and aroma, and add a pound or two of artisanal clover honey to the primary. For some reason the honey aroma and the northern brewer aroma work together amazingly......if you don't beleive me...try it.
 
I too decided to do an Oatmeal IPA based on what I had around the house.

74% 2-Row
9% Bob's Red Mill oatmeal
8% Panela brown sugar
7% C-60
Heady Topper Yeast (RVA Labs "Hoptopper")
And a generous dose of Calypso hops.

The nose on this thing is incredible.
Started off at 19.2 brix and it's bubbling away.
 
It works well. Surly Brewing in Minneapolis, MN adds oats to a few different beers: IIPA (Abrasive), saison (Cynicale), brown (Bender) and probably a few other seasonals. I was a bit surprised at first since I usually think oat stout.
 
I use a little over 20% flaked oats in my house IPA, I do BIAB. Mine have not turned out hazy at all. The thread for the HopHands clone has it at 18%. I have never had it but it is supposed to be a great beer. I personally didn't get much out of the oats until I got to the 15% range.
 
Glad to hear this. I was planning on doing very something similar to this recipe this weekend except with a somewhat different hop profile. :mug:

0.5 ounce Centennial @ 60 min
1 ounce Galaxy @ 20 min
1 ounce Galaxy @ 10 min
2 ounce Citra @ flameout
0.5 ounce Mosaic @ flameout
1 ounce Citra @ 7 Days
0.5 ounce Mosaic @ 7 Days
1 ounce Galaxy @ 7 Days
