To everyone who has to order ingredients i have no idea how you all do it. half the time i poke around in the store to make a recipe or see something i want to try. What if you forget to order something? that would stink. That's dedication.

It's really quite simple. Make a recipe. Make a list of what you need. Make and order to buy what you need. Check off what you already ordered. When all the ingredients have a check by them, you will know that you haven't forgotten anything.

I order more than I need. Especially if ordering larger amounts gets a price break. Then I have a lot if not all that I need for the next batch.

I order most of my ingredients online. I don’t purchase by the recipe, however. I buy stuff in bulk, enough for several months at a time. Since I tend to brew a random rotation of about 10 recipes, I can look at my stash when I decide I want/need to brew, and brew what I have the ingredients for. By ordering 150-200 lbs of grain and several pounds of hops at a time I only have to purchase ingredients about twice a year. I use dry yeast, partly for convenience (no starters), and partly because of my location. I’m far enough off the beaten path that getting items which should be kept cold delivered in a timely manner isn’t a good bet.

By having an inventory on hand I can brew on the spur of the moment if the opportunity presents itself.

I'm getting this. I don't think I can continue what I'm currently doing. I enjoy it enough but people are zapping my energy. Questioning my current path... So brewing has kind of been on the back burner. It doesn't help I've kind of run out of ingredients with no motivation to order. Now the weather isn't great. Need that electric brewery!

Usually if I push myself to brew I'll get back into it.

Small batch, on the stove, in the house, where it's warm. If comfort is holding you back you need to get more comfortable.

All the Best,
D. White

so , because they were both previously divorced you wont do the beer for them? People change , maybe this is their forever .

I could be wrong, but I didn't get that from his post.

I read it as, if he gets a venue, he won't be able to bring and serve his homebrew because of the liquor licensing. For the last part I took it to mean since they both have been married before, that this time maybe they don't need a huge, extravagant, expensive wedding, but perhaps more of a celebration with family and friends. That's how I read it st least.

I am kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to competitions. I enter a fair amount (5+ a year) and find myself wanting to brew more often and try different styles to see how they do. The competitive aspect makes it more interesting for me than just brewing a beer for me to drink while watching football (not that there is anything wrong with that). The prizes also don't hurt!

I would like to brew more styles, but there are only few that I want to drink on a regular basis. For example, I enjoy a good tripel, but I don't want 5 gallons of it. Not sure I even want 2.5 gallons of it. I generally end up brewing mostly the same few styles over and over again.

Had our final walkthrough this morning. Nothing is done and the builder decided to say they wont hang my hood vent now. o_O . What a mess.

I think he is saying that if they have the reception at a venue like a banquet hall or restaurant he would not be legally able to supply beer, so they should have a backyard party he could bring beer. At least that is how I read it.

yeah i would love to have a year were i focus a style and get it perfect. i have brewed the same beer once and only one time.

Yeah. My goal this year was to "perfect" my IPA and Pale Ales then move on to Belgian beers for 2020. I did make some pretty solid IPA/Pale Ales this year but have not really cycled back to rebrew a recipe. I did brew 3 batches of an Imperial Stout recipe in 2019 (2.5 gal, 4 gal, and have a 5 gal in the fermenter). Hopefully I find time in 2020 to focus on a Dubbel, Saison, and maybe a Farmhouse Pale.

Having our third baby in a few weeks ... Taking the time off to improve the brewhouse...
Here's hoping that when I get a chance to put my brewing gloves back on the beer will be even better!
Oh and also sitting for my BJCP licence in a week...gotta stay busy...

Its a hobby, its supposed to be fun and make you happy. If its not, take a break and do something different. I think its good to have a couple hobbies so you can take breaks.

Just don't rush to say you are done with it--look back a year or two from now and see if you've gotten passionate about it again or not. I recently did that with photography. Went all-in getting into it 4-5 years ago and basically over the last 2 years hadn't done anything at all except be the camera dad for my daughter's friend group before school dances and her cheerleading team. I was doing it so little I was out of practice and getting better results with my iPhone. It had gotten to the point where I dreaded doing even that so I finally sold that this summer. I tried the quick exit with another hobby several years ago when I got burned out but after a year or so I regained my passion for it, and ended up re-buying a number of pieces of expensive equipment I'd sold off. The saving grace there was I had diversified a little bit.

Taking a year off brewing was the best hobby decision I ever made. Before I took a break I was brewing far too often for myself. Every weekend was either brewing or bottling and it turned into a chore. By far I gave away more cases than I drank.

After taking a year off though I felt recharged. I brew what I want (or what SWMBO wants) and that's it. Still happily giving some away but I think in 2019 I had a total of 7 brew days. 4 for myself and 3 with others who were starting out and wanted a hand.

Couldn't be happier about it now. In 2020 maybe I'll brew more, maybe less but at least it's back to being fun again.

What?
You're paying the guy, right?

Yeah they are trying to say it's not in the contract. The plumber also messed my RO system up lol so I had to order parts for a new unit... I can go on for days about how wood floors are damaged and my stove is broken.

The owner is coming tomorrow to talk with us. Hopefully I can have it resolved. I plan on brewing a few ciders and mead until its worked out.

Quick update my house is a disaster.

I was going to start a cider last night but ended up getting in a car crash and my car is totaled :(

Once I get a moment this afternoon I am going to PBW my fermenter and get rocking on the cider.

I plan to do two ciders and a short mead just to fill some kegs.

Brew system is still in pices. My RO system was installed incorrectly and the brewery had to be repainted. I still cant find anyone or hang my hood vent. I have called every contractor I could find.
