Hello all. I'm new to home brewing. I've been using mr beer hme's. Although I like them, I've noticed I've been getting a cider taste to them. Ive done a little research online, & many have said that cider taste comes from Mr beer's lbk. So recently I purchased the brew demon conical kit because I have read that they use better ingredients, & use a different material in their fermenter. They claim that their hme's, or the conical won't produce any cider off flavors. I'm going to brew my first batch using the brew demon this Saturday. I was just wondering if anyone had any comments about that.

What temperature are you fermenting at? Ales can give weird flavours if you ferment too hot. 65f seems to be good for most ales. A cheap temp controller was the best investment I made.

Also check how much sugar you are adding to the HME. A kilo of table sugar or dextrose might be too much. Try one of the brew enhancer packs which seem to be a mix of DME, dextrose, maltodextrine but not as pricey as DME.
