Only fitting that my second post (the first was a contest entry) is in regards to my second brew attempt. My first was a kit IPA (Falconer's Flight) but this time I tried a clone I found on here (Zombie Dust) but not using the single hop part of the recipe, extract style with specialty grains.

I used BeerSmith to get everything together in terms of the numbers and I've hit all of them except my IBUs. I split my extract additions per some research here. Added half at the usual spot in the process and the last half with 15 minutes left in the boil. When I adjusted this my IBUs shot up from 39.9 to 58.4.

First off, does this turn my clone (considered a Pale Ale) into an IPA? Second, is this IBU change normal when doing a split extract addition? It should clock in at around 5.6% ABV when all is said and done.

Also, I've been looking into double dry hopping this but think it might be overkill considering I'm doing 6 days with a 3 ounce blend of what I used in the boil. Any benefit in pulling them after 4 and doing a few more fresh ounces for the last 2?

Thanks!

The only thing I can see affecting the IBU is the amount of sugars in solution are less when the bittering hops are added. I don't know the chemistry behind it but that comes to mind.

As for dry hopping, use your three ounces for 5-6 days. You'll be fine. No reason to swap out.
