do you have a wal mart??? I use iodine from the pharmacy, it works quite well... 1 tbsp per 5 gallond of water. I bought some star san or whatever in the hell u call it, and not impressed. going back to iodine.

This is a no rinse sanitizer. It was made for dairy farmers cleaning there equipment. But I really don't want to ruin my beer either. Thanks for the response

I work in industrial kitchens and use quat sanitizer all the time. I don't know if it means anything 'cuz the guy was kinda crazy but I watched him drink close to a 500ml spray bottle full of properly mixed quat sanitizer! He didn't get sick, ymmv!

I use star san in my homebrewery, pretty much because everyone recommends it. If I knew quat worked, I'd probably use that because of comfort levels.

Not worth ruining 5 gallons of beer, a several hour brew day and most importantly 4-8 weeks of your patience between brew day and glass because you did not order specific home brewing sanitizer online. Northern Brewer, Midwest and Adventures in Home Brewing all will ship (for a fee).

Well I do appreciate the advice guys but I used it anyhow. It's was a extract kit from northern Brewers. British bitter ale. The more I read about this cleaner the more it seemed to relate to star San. I think more people need to go out in a limb and try stuff. The worst that will happen is I ruined the beer. I can make more. Let you all know in about 4-5 weeks.

This is very dissimilar to star san. BAd idea in my view.

Star San acive ingredients are very different. What dilution were you using?

"Star San is a broad spectrum, non rinse, food grade acid sanitizer. This product is ideal for home cheese makers looking to cut down on the possibility of contamination during the cheese making process. STAR SAN will keep your equipment, surfaces and tools sanitized for daily use and is not affected by organic materials. STAR SAN is effective against E. Coli and Staphylococcus Aureus.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Dodecylbenzenesulfonic Acid - 300ppm and Phosphoric Acid - 780ppm (When diluted according to manufactures specifications)"

Just google "Star san active ingredients"

We covered QUAT in Brewing Microbiology. Here's the run down:

ADVANTAGES: Residual activity if not rinsed. Less affected by organic material. Test strips used to determine concentration. Can be applied as a foam. noncorrosive.

DISADVANTAGES: Can affect sensory - best for floors, walls, etc. Ineffective against Gram negative bacteria. May be inactivated by hard water (Ca, and Mg) AND low pH. May be unsuitable for CIP.
