I am new to all grain brewing and Blue Moon is my favorite beer so I wanted to try Nilo's #12 recipe from the famous Blue Moon thread HERE. I also signed up for a trial run with BeerSmith and I'm having some difficulties getting the recipe inside BeerSmith to get the correct OG, FG, and ABV. The OG should be 1.052, I keep getting 1.062. The ABV should be 4.7%, I keep getting 5.5%. Any idea why? Should I even try to get BeerSmith to sync up with his recipe?

Here are my BeerSmith printouts:

Type: All Grain
Batch Size: 5.00 gal
Boil Size: 6.54 gal
Boil Time: 60 min
End of Boil Vol: 5.98 gal
Final Bottling Vol: 4.60 gal
Efficiency: 72.00 %
Est Mash Efficiency: 82.8 %
Est Original Gravity: 1.062 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.020 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.5 %
Bitterness: 15.2 IBUs
Est Color: 4.9 SRM

Amt Name Type # %/IBU
5 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1 43.5 %
5 lbs White Wheat Malt (2.4 SRM) Grain 2 43.5 %
1 lbs Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L (10.0 SRM) Grain 3 8.7 %
8.0 oz Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 4 4.3 %
1.00 oz Hallertauer [4.80 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 5 15.2 IBUs
2.00 tbsp Corn Starch (Boil 15.0 mins) Other 6 -
2.00 oz Orange Peel, Sweet (Boil 10.0 mins) Spice 7 -
1.00 oz Orange Peel, Bitter (Boil 10.0 mins) Spice 8 -
0.50 oz Coriander Seed (Boil 10.0 mins) Spice 9 -
1.0 pkg SafAle English Ale (DCL/Fermentis #S-04) [23.66 ml] Yeast 10 -

Thanks a ton,
Chris

What efficiency was used in the recipe you're trying to copy? My guess is that this is the source of the difference. When entering a recipe into Beersmith from a source that doesn't list the efficiency, I just enter the quantities used by the recipe, then adjust the efficiency to match their expected value. Then scale the recipe to fit my own expected efficiency. So in this case, change your efficiency in Beersmith so that you get the same OG/ABV as the recipe you're copying. Then scale that to your own system's efficiency.

can't explain it any better other than to show you where to do that

You've also got a huge loss between end of boil volume and bottling volume. You should take a look at that as well.

I appreciate the tips. If I change the efficiency down to 60% I get the correct readings but I've read through his thread and it only mentions a 70% mash efficiency.

Here are the equipment settings that I have currently and honestly since it's my first all grain batch I just matched the pre-set "Pot and Cooler (5 Gal) - All Grain" equipment settings. I converted a 10 Gal Home Depot orange cooler to a mash tun.
