hOW YALL ARE. my name is brian a retired fire captain from New Orleans.Looking for a hobby thought I would try my luck at brewing.I have ordered all of my brewing supplies I think I will have what I need. Seems the more I read the more confused I get. Hope to have it all sorted out by the time I am ready to brew. My question for know is when I am ready to bottle what is the best way to sterilize the bottles? Thanks for your help and input.I am sure this won't be my last question.

Welcome to the forum.

For your first question of bottle sanitation the best way I have found is to rinse them out with warm clean water to make sure that there is no debris left in the bottle. Then soak them in a no rinse sanitizer like Star San to sanitize them. They only need a few moments in the solution.

Anything that touches your beer should be sanitized with a no rinse sanitizer like Star San.

Good Luck!

Hey buddy, it looks like someone else here uses caps lock a lot :cross: Glad I'm not the only one.

You're in the right place... ask as many questions as you can and read a lot. It can be overwhelming, there is a massive amount of information out there but take it all just a bit at a time and you will end up with great results.

How To Brew - John Palmer This is an amazing resource. Browse through it when you have time if you haven't already.

As for an answer to your question, pick up a bottle of StarSan:

Good luck man... any idea what your first recipe will be?

Welcome from a little ways up north. When I bottled, I would soak my bottles in oxyclean and water then rinse with clean warm water. A quick soak in a Star San solution and your ready to go.

For any question that may arise, you will be able o find an answer on the forum.

Welcome, and i am definitely on the starsan band wagon, works easy and have no problems at all. Don't forget to sanitise your caps as well!

The wing cappers are ok, but the bench cappers don't have problems with short bottlenecks. And the avinator atop a bottle tree makes short work of sanitizing bottles. Not to mention keeping 45 bottles in a two square foot area. Easily at hand. And Starsan is a no-rinse, wet sanitizer many of us like to use Start reading threads & stickies, ask questions & you'll learn what you need to know.

Welcome! I'll add that sanitizing is best AFTER the you ensure the bottles are clean. Make sure there's no nasties stuck to the bottom that bacteria etc can hide within. Pointcity mentioned Oxyclean, I've used TSP (because its what I had on hand) and a bottle brush with great success. I let them soak 5 mins or so, brush off any scaling, rinse and then sanitize.
