Howdy all! I'd first like to thank every participating member of this forum for insight, inspiration, and fueling my life-long beer obsession.

For me, this is how I began brewing:

I've loved beer for as long as I could remember. From sucking the "foam" off the top of my dad's Lowenbrau mug, to sneaking sips from the "hey get me a beer" trips to being legal and front and center during the first microbrew revolution of the mid-90's.

I still remember my first real microbrew, it was Oregon Honey Beer. It was so flavorful and so different from the typical BMC that I was forever changed by that single 22 ounce bottle of perfection. Since then I have had countless more varieties and I don't think I've really had a style that I did not find any redeeming qualities in.

A friend of mine whom I enticed into the beauty of beer began brewing about 10 years ago. He in turn introduced my beer-loving partner in crime to the brewing arts, who then indoctrinated me into brewing as well... talk about the circle of life (beer).

I do not currently own my own equipment as I typically brew with my friend, but recently I decided to get off my a$$ and actually put together a brewing system.

My friend's system is fairly basic and many of the recipes we have put together have suffered from a novice level of knowledge and a lack of process control. It's not to say that we have not put together some decent batches, but of those I would say were actually "good", good luck in being able to repeat them.

When I sought to put together my own system I first was looking to create an "enhanced" version of what I was used to using: coolers, single infusion, buckets, etc. I then watched a Brewing TV series with Will Wheaton where they used pumps for recirculation and that was it for me.

I researched mash recirculation which brought me to temperature control via RIMS/HERMS which then brought me to the decision to create an electric brewing system.

I am currently in the planning/light purchases stages of assembling my electric brewing system. I cannot be more excited... and terrified for how much I will actually spend on this venture.

I have lots of questions and lots of ideas that I have either not seen at all or not to the extent I am thinking- so brace for impact!

Welcome, where about in SoCal are you at? I'm in Gardena and like you was originally planning on a full EHERMS setup, but because of costs went with a propane powered 2 Tier 3 vessel setup. I've been dialing in my process and have been making some pretty excellent beers of late.

There's quite the home brewing scene if you're into clubs (which I'm not really) and we have excellent local home brew shops.

Feel free to ask questions and good luck on your build!

Beskone, I live up in the high desert area. I know we have at least one club up here and they're quite active.

I know my system is going to cost a pretty penny, but I really want to build a system with no excuses and no parts I want to change out in the near future.

I don't have all the parts planned out yet as I still have some decisions to make, nor do I have all the necessary funds set aside, but I am patient and determined.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

You don't need an expensive rims to recirculate, especially if you're just getting started and you're not 100% brewing is for you. Here is my direct fire recirculation setup, love it to death. I'm happy to answer any questions about it.

PS

Since you're in the AV, have you heard of BEAVR?

cannman, I like your rig- thanks for the share. I have been co-brewing for over five years now, so I am definitely sure that brewing is for me. I really think I am going to "go for it" with me E-HERMS system, though. I believe it will marry three of my biggest passions; tech, cooking, and of course beer.

As for the BEAVR's, yes- I've actually hung out with a few of those guys, really cool folks. Once I get my rig all set up and I get a few batches under my belt I may look into their club.
