Happy holidays! I just revived my Mr Beer kit for Xmass. And I just ordered my Witty Monk Wheat kit for my first brew!! As u can tell from Name. I'm a Hugh Wheat Guy. Love my blue moon. So I'm looking for any thing on brewing Wheat Beer!!! I'm also a die hard Fly Fishermen. So hope to make lots of friends and make some good beer. Any info or recipes on wheat beers??

You actually like Blue Moon?? I can't believe I finally met one of you!! :D

Welcome to the forum, and here's to making better beer than Blue Moon!! :tank:

OP. What you will find is that after a little practice, all comercial beer will be somewhere between a 2-5 on a 10point scale. Stuff you make can be anywhere along 1 to 10 (some days some beers just have flaws - bad sanitation, under pitch yeast, etc) But usually you will make stuff in the 6 to 10 range. So yeah it shouldn't be hard to make better than BlueMoon.

Mr. Beer is a fairly decent kit, and when you are ready for the next step you will make better beer. (former mr. beer maker)

Thank you all for the warm welcomes. I defiantly will prolly out grow my Mr Beer kit. And will wanna get into making better and more. So any info on what I'll need to grow bigger I'll take. Is there any good magazines out there to get and learn more about the hobby!!!

Not to advocate to strong for any of this...

Brew Your Own: The How-To Homebrew Beer Magazine - home page is a brewing mag with many online articles
for equipment/etc take a look at one of the advertisers who are here, or find your local homebrew supply (store?) aka lhbs. I personally use a combination of both. I find if I want a recipe that getting it mail order is helpful (and generall less price) since my lhbs do not have any recipe kits beyond a 20min kits (like mr beer or coopers etc). However I've had problems with yeast in the summer, so the lhbs are my yeast source at times.

Welcome, from another fellow NYer. I'm curious, do you drink your blue moon with a slice of orange? Haha, your taste buds are in for a hell of a surprise when you start drinking your homebrew

That's for the welcome. And yes I drink my Moon with a Orange slice. I squeeze it in the beer then drop the whole slice in and let it soak up and eat it when beef is gone. I love all the Blue Moon selections. Except PumkinMoon. I'm not a pumpkin guy. And the Pale Moon is ok. I love WinterAbby. And Spring Blonde. But of course Blue Moon is my all time Fav

I'm very interested in your progression in this hobby, seriously. You're like the perfect example of someone who entered the craft beer market based on a BMC specialty beer. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the new stuff you're going to enounter.

Thank you. I'm getting very pumped. My stuff should be in today. To start my first brew. I've already been looking around for wheat beer recipes for 5 gallon brews. And taking notes. Hope to make up some clones to my Favorite beer.

While I'm not a Blue Moon fan, I've made the blue balls clone a couple of times. First, it's a decent wit, and second it is popular with friends who are mostly bmc or corona types. It's an easy to make, quick to make, decent tasting brew. Also, doing clones will help the op learn to control their process and have something to actually compare their brew to to. To each their own regarding what is good.

Yeah, i'd love to see what you like in a year from now. Blue moon was the first beer I had that I thought was craft beer. Then I had SNPA, and started drinking SN, stone, magic hat, blue point and I was hooked on craft beer. I'll still have blue moon if its the only thing a bar has besides bud and coors. I'd never pick it over a real craft beer though

I like Magic Hat and RedHook also. I've been to both Brewers for a tour. It's neat stuff. I hope to make lots a good brews

I still drink a lot of Spotted Cow. Nothin' wrong with Blue Moon. Pretty good for a mass produced beer. I don't have a favorite beer, or anything close to a favorite beer. I don't like to be pinned down on styles.

In addition to the aforementioned BYO, Zymurgy is a great pub. I subscribe to both and patiently await each issue.

I started with extract like everyone else and now have a ten gallon RIMS system. I am on about batch 7 or 8 on the RIMS and although improving, still aren't making as good of beer as with my Rubbermaid Coolers.

It's going to be a gradual progression. Try not to get overwhelmed, it's like letting your kids grow up too fast. Enjoy each stage.

Well my Witty Monk Just came in. Now waiting for wife to get home so I can run to store to get tools and temp gauge. Any suggestion on what to get? I kno I need to temp gauge to stick on side of leg. And one to keep in closet to watch temp. Any other cheap useful tools should I get.
