Ozarks method above is deluxe, short of that, I would still mount the pulley to your bag and pull the hoist rope up with one hand while using your other hand to assist lifting the bag up. The pulleys benefit is mostly holding the bag at height, not as much making the lifting easier.

That should work well!!!

But putting the pulley on the bag (rather than fixed at the suspension point) provides a 2x mechanical advantage which cuts the force required to lift the bag by half. Right now I am using the exact method you recommend. The ratchet is definitely a handy thing to have.

sweet! I have leftover pulleys from my previous setup. Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Now I'm confused? One pulley no advantage regardless of where the pulley is high or low, 2 pulleys gives 2x advantage....

Pondering....

Oops your right Doug! Pulley at the load does give 2-1 advantage as there are 2 parts working line w only one pulley as the pulley is not fixed....thanks

Pulley at the bag!

Maybe I need to go back to school haha....

tie or hook the end of the rope to the ceiling support, run it down through the ratchet then up to the ceiling pulley then down to your hand, that rope barely reaches my garage but works, now the ratchet is hard to pull with any weight by its self but with the double pulley its not feather light but much easier

Yes, I agree with this deluxe 2 pulley set up, but after a little thought, as Doug correctly pointed out the second pulley is just reversing direction of the business end of the rope, allowing you to pull down rather than up.

Attaching the line to the ceiling, and the pulley to the bag provides the same 2-1 advantage.

Perhaps personal preference, height of your kettle, and the height of the user. I find the single ratchet pulley attached down low to the bag works well.

Fwiw I also use a loop of cord to wrap and cinch the middle third of the bag to reduce the height of the pulley.
