I got a glass carboy for Christmas and used it for the first time a few weeks ago. After the brew was finished and I started the cleaning process I tilted the carboy on its side to empty all of the yeast and trub. I rocked it back and forth once and it Cracked. What the Hell, I picked the piece of glass that chipped off and it was less then a millimeter thick. How are you supposed to empty the carboy if you can't even tip it on its side. I will be using better bottles and ale pales from here on out.

Is there actually a subject beaten so to death that no one cares anymore?

That would be refreshing...

Yep, SS for me too! I have been gradually accumulating as many Sanke and corny kegs as possible. I do still have 3 carboys, and multiple buckets, but I try not to use them. I should just sell them.

Yeah for sure I only mostly use better bottle carboys just because of the weight issue. I do sour beers in glass though. One thing though I had a slight problem with my heater and it warped one of my better bottles, that would not have happened to a glass carboy.

A milk-crate will offer some protection for the carboy when cleaning/moving.
But yeah, I went to sanke kegs and will never look back.

Maybe the new ones are Chinese glass? I have 3 6.5 gal carboys. The newest is stamped 1967 on the bottom, I think one is marked 1929. They still look new and have been rolled around and no damage. I think yours must have been damaged before you used it. They are pretty tough and thick glass.

Damn, they should make adamantium carboys. I'm going to assume that it would be foodsafe since wolverines bones were made of it.

man, this one time i ate some bad food and got food poisoning... im never going to eat food again!

You would probably choose to not eat that same food or at that same place again, such is the tone that this thread was created in.

But let me ask you, other than extended aging, what is the true benefit to glass?

BBs won't shatter
BBs are half the price
BBs are 1/6th the weight

Glass looks cool
Glass ... ...

You can use glass that might break or a BB that might get scratched. I will use my remaining glass until it breaks and whenever it does it will be replaced with plastic.
