I'm still pretty new to brewing, about 6 batches in, but I'm interested in kegging. I've looked at quite a few threads on here, but I really need some good resources that can point me in the right direction. I am not exactly sure of what basic equipment I need to get started and how to hook it up. I will be getting stuff piece by piece. One of the penalties for getting to live in Hawaii is having to deal with high shipping costs, so I will have to save money. I just want to make sure that I am spending money on the stuff I actually need and once I get it up, how I would go about putting it all together. The other question I have is, I have a spare fridge that I would like to install this in. From my reading, it is generally safe to install a faucet through the door, is that true? Are shanks required to install a faucet? Lastly (for now), is it generally better to store the CO2 inside the fridge or leave it outside and find a way to run the gas lines in to the keg? Thanks for any information and resources you can provide.

Here are answers to your questions:

You can definitely install a faucet through fridge doors, there are no freon lines. In fact, I just did it today! Shanks are required, otherwise your faucet won't be attached to anything. As far as CO2 goes, you can put it inside the fridge or outside, but the regulator won't be completely accurate at colder temperatures. As long as that doesn't bother you [dispensing pressure is all relative anyway], you're fine either way.

This is a great kegging resource:

This is a nice kegerator-building resource:

Those were great resources, thanks for the response. Now to figure out the most cost effective way to order everything.

Keg Cowboy has great prices for the stuff that you'll need...I would cross-check that with Midwest Supplies and Northern Brewer, maybe make some spreadsheets, and see which one will get you the lowest overall cost with everything.
