Hey I am brewing my first batch and I am ready to bottle...with the kit it came with a pack of 5 ounces of dextrose...but the directions say to use 3/4 cup of dextrose...this is much less than the bag if it is measured out. Should I use 5 ounces or 3/4 cup? I thought that there were 8 ounces in a cup and so 5 ounces should be less than 3/4 of a cup but it's not. How does this measurement work out?

Use the whole bag of priming sugar that came with your kit. It's pre-measured for what you need to bottle 5 gallons. :mug:

Correction, there are 8 FLUID ounces in a cup - fluid ounces are a measure of volume, ounces are a measure of weight, so it's apples and oranges.

Personally, I would just use the amount the recipe stated (3/4 cup) and assume that they just sent you more sugar than you needed just to be on the safe side. However, unless they sent you WAY more than 3/4 cup priming sugar, you're probably fine to use the whole bag as dblvsn stated. Choosing one or the other will just affect the carbonation level. What style of beer is it? Different styles have very different ideal carbonation levels.

Lucky you! My first batch won't be ready to bottle for another week. I'm really anxious to give it a taste!

Edited to add: My kits have come with prepackaged priming sugar too. They say 5 oz. which would be dry weight of course. I'm just going to add the whole thing.
