Just got final approval on the new brew house! Time to finish out the fermentation room and move the equipment in and start brewing. :ban: :mug: :rockin:

Just a shot in the dark but I just finished reading a book called "Rework", the author has written a couple books. His first was just a published version of a blog he created about his experiances in starting his business and he eventually made over a mill on it.

Just a thought but there might be a market out there for your experiance. You'd be suprised how easy it is to get a book on Amazon or Apples ebook store.

Here's a pic of the new burner. Now that's a fire! :)

Here's a rough idea of the setup I have. I haven't setup the sparge station yet.

What kind of fermenters are those in the background? Brand?

do you think you could post all the pics thus far in a single location so that tools like me dont have to sift through 85 pages of threads....if not...no worries.

Just read the entire thread, came across it in my research. You have done an amazing job here so far, and I wish you continued success as you go on.

How has this venture affected your day job? I know you work from home, what is it that you do if we may inquire?

Congrats and what an inspiration... I've read through all the pages the past few hours and just have to say wow...
am definitely subscribing to this thread and good luck in your future plans!
Still have your day job... or this fulfilling your income needs now?

I do still have my day job. I support medical imaging equipment. I've been taking a lot of vacation time lately to get this building finished. Still have a bit to go but it's getting there. Now I need to build some doors and do some finish work.

Gear-gasm time. 4 port manual bottle filler. Now I just need to figure out how to use the thing. :cross:

What's your running total for the project?
I'm envious of you and your nanobrewery!!
Where are you located CA??
I wish I had the time and $$ to do it...

That bottle filler looks awesome...

Was that part of the 7bbl system you have waiting, or did you buy it? If you bought it, how much?

Did you pay for it out of profits or buy it and plan on paying back? How much beer do you have to sell to pay for that and how long will it take?

Where did you get that bottle filler? That thing looks great. If you have a link or something that would be great for all of us nano-dreamers to know. Thanks Hoss

Good to see things are going well. Just spent most of the work day on this (stupid meetings!). Most of you out there might know this already, but the brewing network does radio shows on Sundays. Looking at the archives they have a few solely devoted to starting brewerys/brewpubs. Look for archived shows 8/28/05, 9/18/05, 4/02/06, 8/06/06. All the other shows are good to listen too as well. I too hope to start an endeavor like this in the near future, but got to get rid of those student loans first. Keep on keepin' on.

Hoss I congratulate you on your accomplishment. I only wish that one day I am able to do something similar. "Subscibed"

Finally made it through the thread, very inspiring. I'm curious if you have looked into the future enough to figure out when you would be able to quit the day job and brew full time? How many barrels do you think you'd have to be selling in order to be profitable enough to support you and your family?

I'm looking to take similar leap soon, but I really don't want to keep a full time job, I'd rather brew full time. I don't have to depend on income from the brewing as my wife makes enough money but I'll need some to supplement. I've been trying to figure out if I should get investors for a 7-15 barrel system or start small and work my way up like you are doing. It's a tough decision.

Thanks for all the posts!

I think starting small is pretty cool, it eliminates the risk of buying giant expensive systems only to find that the demand isn't there. Plus, if you start on a 1/2-1bbl system you can use that as a pilot system for test batches when you ramp to the bigger system - so it's not like it's a waste of money.

I agree. Start small. My 10 gallon system will not go to mothballs it'll be used for pilot batches and seasonal runs that may not require the full 1 bbl amount.

As for how much to sell to make a living that all depends on the market and what it can bear as far as what you need to charge for your beer. I could make a living off the 1 bbl system is I brewed 3 or 4 times/week and sold everything I produced.

Got the door to the fermentation room on. I have a heater in there seeing if I can get the room to around 68 degrees or not and if it can hold that temperature.

Need a more powerful heater. This one isn't cutting it. On a better note, I'm brewing on the old gear today. It's been too long since I've brewed and it's going to take awhile to get this new gear ready for action. Brewing my Nut Brown Ale.

Today I'm trying a new recipe. It's a Belgian Blond Ale. Numbers are good. OG is 1.070. Very light in color, lightest colored beer I've brewed so far. Still on the old gear.

Anyone used Maple syrup in a Porter before? I'm going to try it today. I have 25 oz of pure Maple syrup that I'm going to add at 10min left in the boil. I'm hoping this gives it enough flavor to taste the Maple.

I wouldn't recommend that Hoss. I tried a couple times to bring out Maple Flavor by introducing Maple Syrup as late additions and even during secondary. But both cases it just fermented out, leaving a bit of a ciders taste. You could try adding imitation maple or what I did was add a couple pounds extra Crystal 60 and 1 lb of Fennegreek. You can get it at an Indian food market.

Perhaps you could bottle with a little bit of Maple syrup in keep bottle. I've heard of people using honey during bottling.
