I commandeered 15 lb of mystery grains (probably grains for an ipa: pale, Vienna, carapils,) and I'm planning on making a basic ipa. I plan on mashing 4.6 gal at 168 deg, based off the 1.25 l to lb to grain, but I'm lost at figuring out how much I need for sparge (still relatively new to AG). Should I just fly sparge in until I have the volume I need?

If you want to batch sparge, you can measure the runoff from the mash and subtract that from the amount you want to boil. The answer you get is how much sparge water to use. See www.dennybrew.com for details. I'd also mash at more like 1.6 qt./lb.

w_s_b, what is a frothy blonde? Frothy where? Frothy as in foaming at the mouth w/o having rabies? Frothy as in worked up to a lather? (whatever that means) Frothy as in dripping as she is too full? Frothy as in she is ready to shave? Oh, frothy. Got it.
What do you call a hooker with a runny nose? Full. Eeeewwww!

Hobos and hookers. That's how.

No the hb shop mixed up some bags of grains and gave them to me.

In other words, they cleaned out the bottom of the grain bin so the paying customers can get fresh malt. Hope yoiu don't line the beer that results because you'll never recreate it. :ban:

Nooo I didn't explain my self well enough. I was getting grains for a hop slam clone and around the same time they were crushing grains for a white ipa. In the midst of blabbering about homebrewing, our bags of grain became mixed up. They crushed some new grains for my brew and instead of throwing out the mixed bags they gave them to me.

Btw I made an ipa with them and it is one of the best beers I have made - go figure.
