Sunday was the day . I posted the recipe of the Hop Head IIPA that I was doing and got some great feedback . this place is great .

I hit the mash temp spot on @152 with 4 3/4 gallons . Chillin with an ESP I brewed last Dec.

I stirred the hell out of it a few times during the Mash I only lost 2 degrees over the 75 minutes (had to help the wife) stirred it again. After 2 vorlaufs it cleared nicely and I lost about a gallon and a quarter. So I did the second batch sparge with 3 1/2 gallons to get me to approx 7 gallons. Stirred the hell out of that one too.

And then did my boil and hops.... And thats where it got interesting .

Edit: spelling

second running into the keggle. I tested the SG of each running first was high even when it cooled to 70. It was over 1.080 was shooting for .074-.080, I even chjecked it wth tap water read right at 1.000 . Next sparge was 1.040 I could have gone for another but I had close to 7 gallons already and it was 5 pm .

So I ended up with about 4 gallons after the boil - I knew I was going to need to add water . The Hydrometer reading is after boil without adding the gallon of water to the wort 1.090 . I added the water but didnt take a reading as it would have been not that accurate.

What the hell did I do to end up overshooting the SG?

looked this mornin and its going hammers to hell in the primary

I ran the grain bill through Promash and OG reads 1.072 for 5 gallons. I think you are close.

1.090 for 4 gallons comes out at 65% efficiency.

Yup that’s the recipe I used. So I guess I did a fair job on the efficiency. I should have sparged once more, but time wasn’t on my side.

It was a great experience to do all the steps. I still will do some with DME and seeping grains but most will AG from now ... Next up ...........Red Irish I'll see if I can get the efficiency up a bit on this one with maybe a 2 sparges instead of 1

You should plan on getting a larger pre-boil volume to get to 5 gallons. Consider brewing 5.5 gallon recipes as with all the transferring you will end with a solid and clear 5 gallons. Definatelty one of the advantages of all grain brewing. You have a nice beer there.

This was the first time I used the Keggle and my new burner. I started just shy of 7 gallons and ended up with 4, I boiled for 60+/- a couple . My old pot and burner was pretty darn consistant at 1-1/2 gallon boil off an hour. I always started with 6 1/2 for a 5 gallon recipe. Guess I need to shot for 8 gallons or more and a longer boil. I was very surprised that it didnt take as long as I expected .. About 1/2 the time it takes for me to make maple syrup. I shuld have taken the reading after I added the water just to see where I ended up.

I sure it will be beer when its done:mug:

But hey this is the way we learn.

I bottled this last Friday I tasted a little of the leftover and it was tastey even flat.

I couldnt hold out any longer I opened one last night. Good wooshing sound and a nice little CO2 cloud . Carb is great could do with more conditioning though it was a little light on head . Was very Hoopy maybe a little too much , I could taste the bittering hops but not so much the aroma hops. I think this one will have to sit a few more weeks to mello out a bit.

guees I will have to keep drinking the ESP and Belgians ... life is rough:mug:

yeah, the bittering will calm down as it conditions... awesome. I am about to do my first AG this weekend.

have to say that this by far the best beer I have made. The bite the back of the throat is gone but with a strong hop flavor , close to Stone Ruination The head is great and the carb is dead nuts on.

This one wont last long as both me and my son love hoppy beers. Had three last night .
