Recipes are great, as long as the ingredients work together. I have done a couple my looking at several recipes and deciding which ingredients from each I wanted in my beer. I used Hopville's "Beer Calculus" to create mine.
When I started each phase, extract-partial mash-all grain, I wanted something I knew l knew would be good. When I get kits I buy 2 at a time and some other items so the flat rate shipping is covering what might have been several orders.
I am fairly comfortable with all grain now and have asked for a mill for Christmas. I will be getting bulk grain in the coming year and creating my own recipes. I have a great start on an Amber Ale recipe that I will be refining and a similar Pale Ale also to be refined.
