Looking to get a critique of my recipe I'm going to try. Looking for an APA that's as light in color as I can get with extract. Doing Pilsnen at beginning and late addition Golden Light. Wanted it drinkable, around 5% ABV, and hoppy (not too malty or bitter). Just looking for feedback at the moment before I brew. I have a total of 2 oz Amarillo, 3 oz. Citra, and 4 oz. of Mosaic to work with.

Thanks!

1.074 OG? That is almost 8%

I make a mosaic pale that uses the same adjuncts but get the rest of your malt down so that you are working with about 1.05 - 1.055 OG. Toss in half oz of something neutral at 60 (I use magnum, sub whatever you have)
Oz of mosaic at 5, 0, DH

If you feel like upping your game (you say you have 4oz to work with) put 2 oz in DH.

Mosaic has that lovely mango like tropical kick. Every time I brew a batch the keg kicks fast.

My Mosaic IPA was right at 1.070. I'd definitely hit the Mosaic at FO and dryhop, 2 oz. each. If you have a neutral bittering hop (Magnum, Warrior, Perle...), use that at 60 for at least half your IBU's. I've been cautioned against bittering with Citra, as it supposedly leaves behind a distinct cat pee aftertaste.

How do you know what cat pee tastes like? :D

I think the Citra thing is somewhat of a myth or just personal opinion that's been echoed all over, but I did the ZD clone with 9 oz of Citra (single hop) and got no cat pee whatsoever. IMO anyway.

I'm not seeing the 1.074 OG on my recipe. I am seeing 1.048 unless I am missing something. As for the Citra cat pee flavor I know there are a ton of beers made solely with Citra so I am not too worried about that.

Thanks for the feedback folks

1.074 is the boil gravity, people.

Recipe looks good, but if you want a lighter color (are looking to get the most out of extract brewing in general) I recommend switching to dry malt extract. Also consider letting your 0 minute hops steep for a good 15 minutes before chilling if you want to maximize hop aroma.

Thanks for the tip on the dry malt. I have already bought the ingredients for this brew but will consider that for the future. (I think I'm going to switch to partial mash soon.) Also good to know about the 15 min steeping of 0min hops. I'll definitely do that.

Thanks!

If you want as light as you can get with extract then why use any crystal aside from the carapils? Drop the Crystal 20L. Also, only use a pound or so of you pilsen LME and put all other LME and dextrose in the boil at the end (last 2 minutes). Basically you'll just be boiling a little pilsen LME, the carapils tea, and the hops for 58 minute before adding the rest of the sugars. This should keep the color as light as possible.

Also, that's a ton of hops for a 5% APA. I think you could change up your hop schedule a bit. Move timings to 2 minutes or less. Focus on Mosaic as your primary hop with the others adding a touch to the mix.

Thanks, person.

All in all it looks solid, and take my Citra comments with the approriate amount of salt.

My only suggestion might be a change in yeast. For all the hops you're putting in this brew, it's worth the extra money for a liquid yeast.

I'd recommend White Labs California Ale (WLP001). It ferments super clean and helps bring out hop flavors. It's worked great for me, and lives up to it's reputation.

I did actually pick up liquid yeast. I was worried about adding more towards the end as it jumps up the IBU's. I thought it might be a lot of hops but figured that the majority of my hops are going in at 5m and under that it might not end up being overly hoppy.

Mosaic stands pretty well on it's own...... it's a lovely mosaic of flavors (pun intended).... Burying it under a bunch of Amarillo and Citra does not let the Mosaic really shine. Amarillo and Citra have elements that are in Mosaic already. My favorite Mosaic brew so far uses Mosaic and Willamette........ the Willamette for the spice Mosaic lacks. I've also added Motueka in small amounts to broaden the fruit pallet just a bit without overpowering the Mosaic.. Ironically I just finished a bottle of Mosaic Delight Lager.......My own recipe, a few minutes ago........ It's wonderful in a pilsneresque beer.
