Ha..I had this conversation with MTPilot a while back because a beer drinking buddy and I are convinced that no good beer comes from Montana. I was in Billings this past summer and couldn't find a decent beer and every beer i tried outsate taht was brewed in Montana was not that good.

The other guys are correct that there is great beer further west in Bozeman and Missoulia, but must have overlooked one of the best in the state right there in Billings. The Montana Brewing Company has a bunch of national medals and even took the small brewpub of the year at the 2007 GABF.

Is there any recent update to the this list? I got in to Great Falls, MT today to do some backpacking in Glacier National Park for a week and I'm looking to bring some beers back to Dallas on the plane home. Of the Big Sky beers, we only get Moose Drool in Texas. I've also heard good stuff about Bayern Face Plant Weizen Bock and Lewis and Clark: Tumbleweed IPA.

Thanks!

So much good beer in Montana now. The statements in 2008 are far outdated.

Short list for Great Falls area:
Bayern Dragon's Breath
KettleHouse Cold Smoke
Madison River Copper John
Neptune's Belgian Blonde

I'm a huge fan of Carter's and Überbrew, both in Billings.

+100.

Take some Cold Smoke home. Comes in cans so it travels nice.

Just got back from a 10 day vacation to Montana!! Loved Cold Smoke and anything from Bayern. Moose Drool is great too but you can find that outside of Montana. Kind of funny though that I had one of the worst beer of my life up there...Flathead Cherry Ale from Glacier Brewing Co. It was cherry season up there so I thought it had to be good. Wrong. Disgusting. It even said right on the bottle "Artificial Flavor. Natural Color."

I will definitely keep an eye out for Cold Smoke. Had Copper John Scotch Ale last night at the Sip n Dip last night. Really quirky tiki bar. Definitely hit it up if you're in Great Falls. Live mermaids swimming in a tank behind the bar and 90 year old Pat the Piano player who has been there for 50 years. Never knew this place existed.

Cold smoke is hard to find in GF as the brewery has had to pull back the area to meet demand. The best bottle shop is Vintage Cellars. Can't really take their beer on a plane, but stop by Bowser Brewing. Or if you are real bored we are cutting malt barley in the area.

The sip n dip is a great place. Hope piano pat never passes on, but when she does I bet half the town shows up.

Couldn't find Cold Smoke anywhere but did come back with a mixed six pack with Bayern Summer Bock, Tumbleweed IPA, Going to the Sun Road IPA, Hopper Pale Ale, and Wheatfish Wheat Lager.

Also stopped at Bowser Brewing in Great Falls for a few drinks.
