i haven't seen anyone use this type of device as a fermentation chamber, even after extensive research. does anyone have experience with a small upright freezer (similar in size to a dorm fridge)? would it work out? i would be using a temp controller.

or

should i just sell this one and buy a dorm fridge?

I think one of the draw backs with some upright freezers is they have the cooling element built into the shelves. In order to make room for your beer you need to carefully bend then out of the way. It seem like they would work OK if they were used to cool an add on chamber.

That will work ok as long as you are careful with any holes you cut. If you have the space, try craigslist for a chest freezer. For my kegerator, I got a nice sized chest freeze that works just fine for about $40. cant beat that!

An Avanti 4.3 Cubic Ft fridge without freezer is what I am using for a fermentation chamber. The 7.9 gallon wine buckets fit on the bottom shelf with no mod other than building a wood shelf to set it on vs the glass on it comes with. Works great and you can easily find them used for $50 or less.
