So I ordered this mead essence on a website to try and make mead because where I'm at currently I cannot buy it. I'm curious do I just get some grain alcohol and put it with the essence in a oak barrel and just let it sit for a couple weeks? will it actually taste like mead and is there anything else I need to do. I wouldnt mind trying to make mead the old fashioned way but right now its not really possible. Thanks for the help!

If you dont make a real mead what is the point of adding flavoring to a jug of distilled, you could just make some fake honey and ferment that, WVMJ

Ive never heard of mead essence, but i would assume its meant to add honey flavors to other types of home-brew.
If your looking for a simple mead recipe I suggest looking up ancient orange mead (JAOM ) in the recipes section. You can get almost everything you need for that one at a grocery store.
Good luck!

Mead Essence? Sounds like you have been had. There really is no such thing. I am sorry but the only way is to make mead. It is very easy to do and mead is far more forgiving than beer. There are many recipes and advice, both here and on Gotmead.com.

Mead is so easy to make, why not try it? Honey, water, yeast. Time. Although a friend of a friend made his own grain spirit and flavoured it with honey somehow. Very nice, but at somewhere between 35-50% abv, a little too strong to quaff.

Well I do wanna make it, I'm deployed right now so its kind of hard to make it at the moment, although when I get back I'm going to try to learn how to make mead, maybe even go to a SCA event and learn from them.

The SCA is a great group! People are very helpful and encouraging. If you can make it to pennsic this year I plan on teaching a class on the basics of making mead. Hope to see you there. Be safe!
