I have 2 Master Fit 240v 4500w Elements that I got for free but they have a bolt on flange as you can see in the picture. Would you guys use them if you had them or just pick up new ULWD elements?

Is this for a hot liquor tank or a boil kettle? That would be the difference to me. If its for a HLT then I'd use them in it but not in a boil kettle. You don't want the heating element scorching your wort during the boil, that's where the ultra low density elements come into play. I would not use them in the boil kettle for that reason. I would use them both or just one (depending on how fast you want to raise water temps and how much energy you want to use) in a HLT and set up a HERMs system.

Good point. Initially I was going to use them in both but I thought about getting a 5500w for the BK to heat it faster. I think I will do that.
Thanks for the advice.

I can't see your location but do you live in Lake Tahoe? I grew up there, many years ago and miss it, especially when it gets to be over a hundred here in Arkansas.

Yes, been in Tahoe for around 15 years. I moved here when I turned 21 and still love it. The waters great for brewing as well.

I use a 240v 5500w Ultra Low Density element in my HLT and it works great. I get about 3 degrees a minute when heating up so its not to bad. I bet I could even tune my PID a bit more and get better / faster results but i'm happy with what it does.

Cool. I bet the water is great for brewing.
I moved when I was 18 when I went to college where I met my wife. My parents moved shortly after so I don't have an excuse to visit. I bet a lot has changed. When I left snowboarding was not allowed at several ski resorts, so a lot of us would just go back country. Those were the days...

The only problem I can see is mounting that flat plate on the side of a curved pot and making a seal. Since it uses bolts for mounts you would have to make 5 holes in the pot and make sure they all seal. You would be better off paying $12 for an element at HD or Lowes.
