Im not sure if im reading this right? My first Biab i only got 49% but i milled my grains with a rolling pin ( never again) than im on my second now and I made a Pasta machine mill which worked fairly well by looking at the grain. Well i ended up well over 80%. I used 1.7kg canadian 2 row .2kg vienna and .2kg cooked rice for a cheap light beer for family members my pre boil was over 17 litres as far as i could tell and my gravity is. 1.031/2 at 30*c with a 90min mash and 10 min mash out

I'm not that surprised about this... Going to a better mill on your grain does amazing things for your efficiency! Why do you think professional brewer mill their grains to the point they almost have flour? We can't do that for filtering reasons... But a finer mill will give you a great increase in efficiency...

First question is: Did you really increase your efficiency that much?

Recall that you have to know your volumes to know your efficiency. That's not as easy as it sounds. A given gravity in 2 gallons of wort vs. 2.2 gallons is a huge difference in efficiency, and we're only talking about 3 cups of volume!

Hydrometers are measuring the wort sample you provide, so it is necessary to make sure your sample is well-mixed and representative of the wort you made. If you're dropping it straight into the wort, it has to be well mixed in its entirety. The measurement is also temperature dependent, so make sure to correct for temperature using a web tool.

Make sure that your recipe calculation is giving you a reasonable prediction of OG by cross checking it with other software. This may result in a two minute penalty.

I can't speak for BIAB efficiency, but I can say that in all-grain 80% is not uncommon for a very finely ground crush in all grain. So it is not out of this world.

I mixed the wort and ladled it into a hydrometer test tube ImageUploadedByHome Brew1406189934.728161.jpg at 30c at the moment I have measurements on my spoon for my pot and it was just above 16 the recipe asked for 12 litres into fermenter but im cooling at the moment with 14l i will take another gravity shortly

Well it was 14 liters at 1.040 into the fermenter instead of 1.035 at 12.5 liters at predicted 70% efficiency! Oh well its not going to be as light as expected
