What would the optimal grain to water ratio be for biab full volume no sparge? Or is this a loaded ?
 
Let's see... If you work backward. For fermenter volume of X gallons - any trub loss - boil off - grain absorption = amount you need to start with....

The mash to water ratio will vary with every different recipe.
 
I'm new to BIAB and about to do my first one so excuse my stupidity but, isn't grain absorption going to be the same per pound every brew? So essentially the other factors should remain the same and the mash to water ratio is going to be the same unless a different amount of grain is used each time (which it would be different for different recipes)? Am I thinking this right?

You are right in that a brew with X amount of grain will need the same as another that also has x amount of grain. But to change the gravity only a few points the grain bill in a new recipe will weigh differently thus requiring a different volume of water.

In other words a 4% ABV pale ale will have a much different water volume than a 10% ABV Russian Imperial Stout. Or even another pale ale that is 5% ABV.
 
There's currently two mindsets for biab.

1) Full volume mash
2)Sparging gains effeciency. *

*Optimal method when sparging is generally considered to be equal first runnings and second runnings. Currently best data set done by braukaiser, but was done with traditional mash tun brews with higher grain absorption. I'm exploring the same question but seeing how it pertains to biab. See my thread "equal runnings biab" for more info.
 
Pre-boil volume + water trapped in grain.

I use 0.1gal/lb for water loss, and for 5 gals I want 7-7.5 gal pre-boil (I usually do 11 gal bathes with 13.5-14 gals pre-boil.
