Just picked up the magic hat Fall sampler for '09. It has their Fall '09 'Odd Notion' included in the pack. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and what they thought of it. From the magic hat website the beer is a belgian chocolate stout. I didn't really care for it much upon the first sip, but it started to grow on me as I drank more. The thing that bothers me about the beer, and please excuse my EXTREMELY lamen terminology, is that it almost has a greasy mouthfeel and after taste. anyway, let me know what you thought of it!!

I've avoided Magic Hat ever since I tried their IPA, I think Lucky Cat is the name of it..

I try not to judge a breweries entire lineup by one beer....but it does make it hard to pay for more remembering my last experience.

Yeah I could take or leave lucky cat. #9 is a big hit with the girlfriend so we decided to grab the sampler just because it had some of their other beers in it that we can't get here in six packs. I guess they put out an "Odd notion" for every season. You drink it and then rate it on their webpage and then they decice if they're going to start producing it regurlarly or not. I was just gonna see what the consensus from the good people of HBT was.

Magic Hat is OK. While we're talking VT breweries, Longtrail is awesome!

The #9 is a favorite of mine as far as fruit beers go. I like it enough to have made a clone of it.

Generally, if a beer has a slick mouthfeel then that points directly at diacetyl. This is common in homebrews but I have not come across it in a commercial beer. Rookie mistake in my opinion. Maybe they fermented it too cold for the yeast.
