I already have one I built and it does a good job but I'm looking for a better looking stir plate that was not made in someone's garage. Heated is a bonus.
 
FWIW I don't think you can go wrong with a StirStarter plate. Might cost a bit more than a used one from someone on here, but they are quality units.

I have the materials to build a dozen machines, but they would all look like they came from someone's garage (unless I used hammer paint on them... Hmm....)

Wow! That would be a huge step for me from my build that cost me a total of $7.40.... Something I certainly don't need. YMMV.
 
I use a gallon jug
I use a PC fan and short stir bar
Works fine
I did have to monkey around buying different disc magnets to find nice strong ones that worked through the thick gallon jug bottom though.
 
The one i built is fine.. I just rebuilt it with larger magnets and it wasnt as fast as i would have liked.
