I'm new o the alcohol game but I have a couple friends who are avid and have given me a wealth of knowledge. Then after that I always have google.

My first batch has been racked into 2 half gallon glass jugs one I plan on tasting every month or so to get a feel for the craft and the other I plan on not opening until my birthday in June. I used the "storm the castle" recipe but used glass and d47 yeast, which means it was fermented with an orange plus raisins for yeast nutrients. And yes my airlock was a party balloon. I know I did something right because I had a huge exhausted yeast bed and they kept bubbling for 4 weeks.

I have tasted it at this point and I feel it is an entirely drinkable product. I can't wait to see what time will bring.

Now I do have a question about light. From what I've found about half the advice out there says you don't need to worry about light around mead. What are your thoughts on the matter?

:mug:

Mead isn't as susceptible to "skunking" as beer is (due to hops), and may possibly be more resistant to UV light than white wine (though I have no data to support that; just a hunch based on experience). However, UV light can cause goût de lumière by interacting with riboflavin to create sulfur compounds that smell and taste bad.

More info and some links are in this thread.

yeah. why risk it anyway. put the bottles in a box or throw a blanket over them. then you don't have to worry

agreed, keep it out of all sunlight and fluorescent lighting. t-shirts work well on carboys.

Ok then I shall shun the light.

Now as a follow up.... I checked my bottles today and it looks like the yeast became busy again. Should I re-rack or let it clarify on the yeast bed?
