I can't brew light lagers so that's why I buy commercial versions, which are very good to style.

I brew lots of light American lagers, even though it costs me twice what i could buy them for. Just can't resist the challenge.

Mostly I brew because I think American commercial lagers simply suck. But friends think you can't brew unless you can produce one. I brew because I love German lagers, English Ales, American ales, and so many others. But most of all, I brew because I love the process involved in producing a good beer.

My ultimate goal is to brew a repeatable light lager recipe. Then I would feel comfortable in saying I know how to brew.

You might be buying the wrong ones then. I suppose it's hard to get Victory or Oskar Blues in Arkansas, but please don't assume that Americans can't make good beer of any style.

There, you hit it, my friend. True, Arkansas is the "deep woods" of the current brewing scene, what with two thirds of our counties still in prohibition.

I brew, because I can name on my two hands my favorite beers, and they account for the 15% you mention. Some like the Pipeline Porter from Kona brewing is an awesome beer, but needs more sweetness, the Creme Brule from Southern Tier is awesome but a tad too sweet, the Breckenridge Vanilla porter is my fave, but a tad too bitter.

So figured I know where the perfect beer for my taste buds lies..

The nutty/coffee flavor of the Kona
The sweetness and complexity of the Creme Brule
With the lightness and finish of the Vanilla Porter..

Now just to figure out this whole brewing thing, and how to construct a receipe, and viola the perfect beer.. It's that easy right..

I brew because I found out that both Duvel and Saison DuPont are just pilsner malt and sugar. I just made my first cream ale and have to say, it's hard to beat the satisfaction of brewing a good fizzy yellow beer. It's hard to do well. There is nothing to hide any mistakes.
