So one of the free cornies I got has a small rust spot near the bottom and is leaking. Anybody have a suggestion or idea on any repair, or is it scrap now?

The spot is covered by the rubber boot attached on the bottom of the keg.

I would think scrap. I would be just as worried about off flavors and contamination as the leak. Although the leak is a huge pita too.

Think about this way - If it ruins just one batch then a replacement would have been a better buy.

If the rust spot and leak can be sealed with epoxy, I might do that and then retire it as a dedicated cleaning keg, to hold and dispense BLC.

Otherwise, I'd just scrap it...not worth risking your beer over the price of one keg.

Just curious as to if anybody has ever attempted a repair of sorts on one.

I was thinking some kind of weld repair, but since I dont weld, have no idea how it would be done., but your idea for a dedicated keg for cleaner/sanitizer is doable I think.

Try JB Weld. It's an epoxy that will form a grindable "metal" when it cures.

I wouldn't put beer in it though. +1 using it for a cleaning keg.

Remove the rubber bottom and drill out the rust spot, then find a plug or fitting that you can place into the hole created when you drilled out the rust.

I don't think the metal is thick enough to thread or you could thread the hole and put a plug in, so that is about all I can offer.

I would do as suggested and use it for a cleaner keg.

Salute! :mug:

Turn it into a planter, that way it still has a practical use and adds a brewer's touch to your decor.

Cut it up and make burner shields.
