its funny but its possible it will have a slight leak... if you ever run out of airlocks you can always use a balloon

but this should work... its bubbling up then you know its working... if not then there is possibly a leak with the electrical tape
 
no leaks but I had to tape the straw to the cup
once it started bubbling the straw kept floating to the top
 
Nice and quick thinking, but I think I will stick to a balloon.
Heck, I have used tin foil and it worked. But I was worried.
