Lagering- fridge or freezer?

Can a small refrigerator be used to create lagers, or will I require a fridge? I have both. What is a good, not the cheapest, but not fancy either, controller?

I'd use a controller and I guess it would depend on the capacity you wanted to lager on which fridge to use.

I am getting ready to do my first lager, and from my research a chest freezer with a simple $50 controller seems to be the way to go.

Both of my units are uprights. I'm going to have to modify the door on the smaller fridge, so I will probably go with the freezer which can easily fit a 6 1/2, probably even a bigger, but not two. Digital appears to be the way to go for the controller, wasn't there another diy thread here on how to put one together?

I use a chest freezer and a Johnson controller. My digital controller is important for accuracy, when I slowly drop the temp.
