My lager (which is an extract kit) is in the secondary fermentation at the moment. I havent lagered it yet, because i plan to do this when i bottle. But in the secondary (i have glass demijohns) the lager is looking quite dark an suspiciously ale like.... shouldnt it be a lighter colour? or will it change colour when i lager it?

Color does not determine if it is an ale or lager. Track down some Negra Modelo, Vienna Lager style (or any Black Lager) for a taste of the dark side of lagers. In a simple world, if you use a lager yeast and use the lager process, you have a lager. An ale yeast produces an ale.

Also, an ale will look much darker in a carboy that it will in a glass. Just as it will look lighter in a tall pilsner glass, than it will in a pinch pint mug.
