Hey hbt'ers..this is my first post here on hbt. I've been brewing for about 6months now and LOVE it, but still have a ton to learn. I'm thinking about getting into kegging here soon - and also about going AG. I've been keeping an eye out on craigslist and found this keg for sale locally for $30. I emailed him for pictures and info, and all he could tell me was that he 'thought' it was a 16 gallon keg. This is the only picture he sent me..I know it's not much. but is there any way to tell what kind of keg it is? If anything, would it be good to make a keggle out of? it looks like there is some rust running down the side - but i'm not sure if that's a big deal or not. Thanks for the help

Looks like a regular 1/2 barrel. I would buy it if it's not too dented.

It should be stainless steel The rust might be from some other item sitting on top of it, you never know.

It would make a nice addition if it's not tippy. Dents and holes can be repaired fairly easily. Well, dents if they are not in the wrong location...

EDIT: Looks like the rust is coming from a drain hole in the upper ring. Probably from some nuts and bolts left on top of the keg. Water got in contact with them and dripped rust down the side. Easy clean up for that.

If it is just barely taller than that tote beside it then it looks like a pony keg. Don't know how much they hold but they are not 15.5 gallon

wow thanks for all of the quick replies! I'm still doing small 5gallon extract batches. I've recently purchased a chest freezer and johnson temperature control unit for fermenting, along with a 105,000 btu and a 60,000btu burner stand to move my brews outdoors - so my next step is to go to 10gallon batches. I was going to try and convert this into a keggle..do you think it would work? (assuming that its the right size, that is) I have emailed him and asked for the dimensions of the keg, hoping that it will give me a better idea of what size keg it is. it seems he knows about as much as i do about kegs :drunk: again, thanks for all of the help. you guys are awesome
